On the nature of time?!

There is an interesting podcast on the recent book by Lee Smolin, a well known theoretical physicist at Perimeter Institute.  http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/multimedia/2013/sep/23/lee-smolin-on-the-nature-of-time

here I briefly explain the issue with time.  Well, classical physics suggests a particular direction for time, i.e, everyday is distinguishable from yesterday. If you start a movie from one side to the other, it is distinguishable from playing it backward. However, the governing laws of nature are invariant in time. Additionally, Einstein theory of relativity, merged the nature of space and time together. So, spatial dimension the same as time dimension (we know that space does not have an intrinsic direction as time has, right!). Anyway, this distinction between (current) governing laws of physics and our natural world (at large scale) inspired a lot of discussions to better understand the nature of time. one of these ideas put forth by Lee Smolin which you can briefly hear in this podcast. He usually writes a concise and readable books and I am pretty sure his new book will be the same (in case you are interested. )

Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy

A friend of mine sent me a post entitled:Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy”. It discusses some of the reasons behind 70-80-90 ‘s generations’ unhappiness . The bottom line is that the generation after baby boomer is unhappy because: 1) they overestimate themselves, 2) they have high expectations.

I partly agree with the content, however I should say that some of the reasons are more valid in Canada and US, where in early education, they learnt to consider themselves special.  I could have seen this myself, after I moved to Canada. I don’t say we don’t have it, I just say, in our culture in Iran, we have been taught the opposite; we have been taught everyone else is special and we should learn from them. There was another study in US showing that the first thing  US parents say about their children is that “s/he is genius” whereas in europe parents say “s/he is healthy, happy, etc”.
The second fact which was ignored in this article was the question: ” what is  each generation’s expectation”? For a baby boomer, just being alive and not in the war was an expectation, anything more than that was extra and indeed a source of happiness. Not to mention the sudden excess of resources and wealth in US. A recent study have shown that the average income in US in 2012 is less than 1989! However, for a GYPSY, they have seen their parent, and they have seen that is not fulfilling. Just working everyday and having enough resources to raise your children is the outcome, but why someone should be happy about this? Living is different from just being alive (“the 70’s show” picture some parts of life in 70’s in US which is worth watching)! This is the point where the questions like “why am I here?” and “What am I doing here?” arise!
At the end, we should not underestimate the effect of news, movies, and documentaries advertising the whole idea of increasing expectation. I agree that we should not overestimate ourselves, however, don’t underestimate either. We should stay away from greed, and have a bottom for our expectations. Finally, we should stay away from “(un)social media”!

Are women and men equal?

I don’t know where this slogan comes from, to me it seems that it is a reminiscent of industrialization where human is viewed just as a workforce, as someone who should keep the industry wheel running, so they are equally unimportant. Needless to say, men and women are different in body and in the brain. Indeed, men and women share equal rights such as rights to live, to think, to study, etc, however, they are not equal!  Based on what I can see, there has been a lot of effort on equalization of men and women, instead of equalization of their rights. What do I mean? I mean women are more men-like, today. They even dress the same way!

The current activities of feminism, judging by the result, is actually moving toward anti-femenism. How so? One could argue that by just looking around, there are far more women working, doing sport, and running business out there than before. However, the main point is that, the current feminism’s state of mind that strongly suggest women taking part in the society, from politics to sport, is to be more like men. They go to the same school, learn the same course, wear the same clothes, get the same job. A particularly extreme example is the women sport, I am not aware of any particular sport during last years which was developed by women, as if there is no alternative for any of the activities out there except of those have been developed by men during last centuries.

In the course of history, when men were officially in the absolute power, they have done a lot of mistakes (known today), a feminist movement should not try to make all the same mistakes to prove that they are equal. My suggestion to women is to really find their interests, and abilities, and start to develop what is compatible with themselves. I believe if women start taking part in our society, many problems will be solved easily. For example, if women develop their own mathematics (unbiasedly) they could and would come up with a completely different math which could solve some of the current problems.

None of the things that are made by human-being is necessary to be the same as what they are now. They could easily be better (or at least different), and I hope that women start to believe in their rights for independent thinking and establish ideas and things that are originated deeply from their own feminine side.

what is happening in the middle east?

Looking at the media, it is very hard to ignore the situation in the middle east. Of course some part of the problem is just magnified by media. Some other part of problem is due to pressure and interference from outside world, particularly west. However, I believe the main problem is the clash between eastern and western  philosophy.

Let me open up this issue further. For many years the western society has moved toward the humanistic/materialistic state of mind, where everything is evolving around human and of course nothing exist beyond what we can “see”. Meanwhile, it started to get a huge jump to improve the human life quantities (money, food, life expectancy, etc), of course, mostly ignoring the qualities, particularly after industrialization. However, the eastern culture is mostly based on heavenly school of thoughts, where other things than human matters, yet for improving human life. Despite huge success of east, many years ago, east does not have much success, nowadays. Partly, due to changing the nature of “values”.

As you can see the nature of these two school of thoughts are directly opposing each other. Unfortunately, during last two centuries, not much efforts have been made to settle the differences. This lag in the updating eastern philosophy with the new ideas such as democracy, liberalization, human rights, feminism, etc have led to huge clash as we can see in the middle east.

Just to be clear that, I do not believe that eastern world have to just get the values from the west and institutionalize it. What I believe is that, eastern philosopher should find the meaning of these values within their school of thoughts. As much as this task is postponed the effect of western philosophy on the east is more devastating.

I have found the work by Seyed Hossein Nasr in this direction pretty useful and I suggest everyone, particularly muslims,  to read his books.
